“The Gift” in Intercity Illusions
“The Gift” began as an attempt to write a non-Halloween story during Drawlloween and instead coming up with a winter holiday story. The prompt was the goblin market, so I came up with a single dad needing to get a gift for his young daughter, but paying for it in an unusual (not scary!) way. It was inspired by ideas of goblin or faerie markets where currency isn’t how items are bought and sold.
“The Gift” originally appeared in the now-defunct Bronzeville Bee, and I reprinted it in Intercity Illusions alongside other urban fantasy stories!
