“Catch” in Denizens of Distant Realms
Not quite eight years ago, my friends and I went on a writing retreat, and that excursion resulted in one of my favorite stories that I’ve written. “Catch” is a story of mermaids and love, and it wouldn’t have happened quite the way it did without that writing retreat.
The house we rented was on a lake, and it was advertised as having a dock and a kayak, but none of us were super interested in outdoor adventures. However, I wound up using the dock as a writing spot, with my bare feet in the very cold water, sketching out the beginning of a story. The small island that appears in “Catch” was inspired by a similar small island in the lake, not too far from the shoreline.
