Now Out: “Despite All My Rage” in A Punk Rock Future!
A Punk Rock Future is out today, and it includes my flash fiction piece, “Despite All My Rage.” I wrote this piece mostly in a single night–I drafted up what I called an angry rant, only my friend Torrey misheard that as “an angry rat” … and I ran with it. I revised the story to be from the perspective of an angry teen who had been turned into a rat person, carved it down to be as tight and concise as I could, and then needed a title … which my husband happily provided, shocked that I hadn’t come up with it first. (If you don’t understand the reference, it’s from “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” by Smashing Pumpkins, in which the chorus is “Despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage.”)
A Punk Rock Future has a bunch of tiny pieces of flash, as well as some longer stories. I’m really pleased to be included in the company of a number of prominent authors with my little punk rock piece about an angry rat person!
