Scenes from a Quiet Apocalypse: Where is Destiny?
While I was writing Scenes from a Quiet Apocalypse, I very much had a setting in mind, but it’s a setting that never was named. Astute readers may have picked up on the clues that I left, but for others, it may have read as a strictly fictitious city. The book works fine whether you know the location or you don’t.
But for those who are curious, Scenes from a Quiet Apocalypse is set in Seattle. Destiny begins in a nameless suburban area, but finds her way downtown (The Silent Core) pretty quickly. She wanders through many portions of downtown, including Belltown, the waterfront, the stadiums, the bus tunnel, and more, making stops at a handful of iconic locations in Seattle.
Several of the other characters have taken up residence in strange and forgotten parts of Seattle. Dee lives in an old fallout shelter and Mariam lives in the trolley counterweight tunnels in Queen Anne. Both of these places really exist, though they aren’t accessible to the public. But they seemed to me as good places for someone to hide out during the end of the world.
I’ve worked on other pieces involving an apocalypse and Seattle, but I think this is the first time I left the city basically intact! That makes it a little more recognizable if you know where to look, but also a little more generic if you don’t!
