September 2017 recap

By the numbers:

Stories out at the beginning of the month: 22
Acceptances received: 0
Rejections received: 11
Stories withdrawn: 0
Resubmissions: 13
New Submissions: 1
Stories out at the end of the month: 25

Another slow month, it looks like, with only 11 rejections coming back. I’ve got a few stories that are well past when I would expect to have heard something, but it also appears that a number of magazines are still catching up. And I’ve got some stories on sub to anthologies, which often have a longer window of taking submissions, and an equally long window of response times.

I finished one new story this month, which I codenamed “mall tour.” It’s making the rounds now. The additional stories out at the end of the month (compared to the end of last month) are one that the rejection came in on the 31st but I didn’t get it back out until the 1st, and a story that was out of circulation but went back in for a specific call for reprints.

For my September accomplishments, I finished writing the first draft of Brass & Glass 2 early in the month, and then wrote the outline for book 3. I finished one short story and got the first draft done on another (well ahead of schedule), while a third story went in fits and starts until I had to put it on the backburner for a time when I could focus better on it. I wrote one book review, and I started on the revisions for Brass & Glass 2. My goal with that is to get it to my editors by the end of November. I also put together the pieces for my next collection, Volatile Figments, which comes out in a week!

In October, I’ll be mainly focused on editing Brass & Glass 2. I’ll also be finishing the revised first draft of monsters (mainly a new opening scene) and writing a story that I started a long time ago that I codenamed “monkey!” (and yes, the exclamation point is critical!). I’ll also be revising the story I finished early (arcology, at long last) and start polishing monsters toward the end of the month. I’ve got two reviews on my plate, and I absolutely have to finish any tweaks I’m making to AustenWorld by the end of October, because we start running round 2 of the playtests on November 2nd!

Whew! Busy October!
