October 2021 Recap

There’s a tree covered in butterflies at our zoo. In a couple of weeks, it will be part of the nighttime light display!

By the numbers:
Stories out at the beginning of the month: 133
Acceptances received: 2
Rejections received: 76 (+5)
Stories withdrawn: 0
Resubmissions: 92
New Submissions: 7
Stories out at the end of the month: 148

My numbers for October are getting back to normal, but not quite there! But hey, I’m writing new stuff (a flash piece and six poems), which is an accomplishment, seeing as I was recovering from surgery for all of October!

Drawlloween was a bit of a bust this year. Of the six poems I finished in October, four of them were from Drawlloween prompts. I also got four short stories started, but that’s really all. I only wrote one of the flash pieces for a contest, and I semi-backburnered creepy river. But I got my book review done!

In addition to the planned stuff in October, I also woke up in the middle of the night and thought about a story prompt I’d been given. I had an idea, and then it was “this is too long to be a short story” and “oh, crap, what am I doing with a sci-fi novel idea?”. The end result: I wrote an outline, and I’m doing NaNoWriMo this month to write this harebrained idea. We’ll see how it goes!

So for November:

  • NaNoWriMo. My target is 54,000 words, which should be the first draft of the sci-fi novel, codenamed “derelict.”
  • Finish the draft of creepy river and get it mostly or totally edited.
  • Write a short story for a contest.
  • Write a flash piece for a contest.
  • Write two book reviews.

This is a stripped down schedule, but it’s still going to be somewhat challenging, as our annual gaming convention starts Thursday, knocking out at least four days. At least it’s virtual again this year, which does result in more sleep than usual!
