Fun for Friday: Spooky Etymologies

English words come from all sorts of interesting places, but here’s a list of words with “spooky” etymologies.

While some of these words may have spookier origins than others, it’s interesting to see the way words have shifted from their original roots to their modern meanings. I was particularly interested in the origins of “cobalt,” which, unsurprisingly, is derived from the German word “kobold.” But the deeper explanation behind why this element and a devious creature share their roots was fascinating, particularly for someone who writes in the shared Cobalt City universe! I think my fellow Cobalt City writers are going to find this just as fascinating, and it won’t surprise me if one or more of us works it into our next piece!
