September 2015 recap

By the numbers:
Stories out at the beginning of the month: 18
Acceptances received: 1
Rejections received: 12
Stories withdrawn: 0
Resubmissions: 13
New Submissions: 2
Stories out at the end of the month: 19

So September was a pretty good month! I got two new stories done (witches and machine) and submitted. And I got another story acceptance this month, but I’ll hold off on announcing it until I get the contract signed.

I didn’t quite accomplish everything I was hoping for, though. Before September even actually started (but after I posted the August recap), I decided to move monkey! further down on the schedule. There’s just no compelling reason to finish it at the moment, and it keeps distracting me from what needs to get done. So I’ll get to it eventually, when it becomes more pressing.

I also started working on a story I call “blues,” but I realized it needed a POV change, and then I decided that the story that I wanted to tell wasn’t what the anthology I was writing it for was actually looking for. So I shelved that one, to work on later, in the way that I want to tell the story.

And I was planning on getting started on record, but here we are, on the 1st of Halloween (that’s October, for those of you who are not as Halloween-obsessed as me), and I don’t have the outline done. I’ve been rolling this one around in my brain for a couple of weeks, though, so it’s getting into shape.

Finally, the revisions to pirates are still ongoing. I’m making good progress, and I think I should have it into a nice second draft by the end of October.

Which segues nicely into my other plans for October, which is a fairly short list. Finish the revisions on pirates. Get record written. And outline island, which is my NaNoWriMo plan for this year.

Island started out as a short story, but it seemed like there was more to tell. As I’ve rolled this one around in my brain, I think it’s grown to fill out a novel, not just a novella or a long short story. So I think this will work. When I actually get the outline nailed down, I’ll know better.

I do have one other project in the works in October. A few weeks back, a friend on Facebook posted something called “Drawloween,” which is a list of things to draw on each day of the month of October. My comment was that it could also work as writing prompts. So each day, I’m taking a look at the Drawloween list, and writing something related to the thing. Today, which was “ghost,” I wrote two little snippets about what the main character from island and the main character from pirates think about ghosts, told in their voice. I plan to do similar things with the other days, unless one of them strikes me as being perfect for a piece of flash that I can knock out in a single day. I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do with the results, but I may end up posting some down the road. Hopefully, I will be able to use them for something else, though!
