August 2015 recap

By the numbers:
Stories out at the beginning of the month: 18
Acceptances received: 2
Rejections received: 15
Stories withdrawn: 0
Resubmissions: 17
New Submissions: 0
Stories out at the end of the month: 18

The numbers this month are oddly symmetrical, and yet not. I got word of two story acceptances: “Veli tis Artemidos” (a reprint) will be appearing in the September issue of Beyond Science Fiction (due out tomorrow), and “Terpsichore” (a new flash piece) will appear at EGM Shorts in late November. And despite two acceptances, I still have the same number of stories out on submission, because of rights reversions. So I’ve still got 18 stories making the rounds.

I did get two new stories (machine and blues) outlined, and I finished the first drafts of witches and machine. I’ve started on the revisions to witches, which fortunately look like they won’t take too long, as that story is for a call that concludes in the middle of next week! I also started working on the revisions to pirates (which is novel length), and found that it mostly needs more words. I’ve gotten through the first four chapters so far, with plenty more to go.

What fell off of the schedule for August was monkey! (still not done, but I’m getting there) and boat (which was bumped due to a call for submissions that will be “blues”). All in all, though, I’m basically still on track.

For September, I’m planning to finish writing monkey! and get that revised (though I don’t know if it will go on the rounds of submissions), and also to revise and submit witches and machine. I’ll write blues, and start writing “record,” which is for another special call for submissions. And I’ll keep on trucking on pirates (planning to finish that by the end of October).

NaNoWriMo is already lurking on the horizon, though I won’t be getting started on the planning for that quite yet. But I am tossing around ideas in my head, and I have a REALLY robust Pinterest board for this year’s novel. Pinterest is equal parts time waster/procrastination device and an actual place to store ideas. So I have fun with it. 🙂
