The numbers for this month are a little bit weird. I had gotten a story accepted for publication a couple of years ago, but it became apparent that the anthology it was selected for was not going to be published. So after a lack of response from the publisher for several months, I formally withdrew the story, tidied it up, and submitted it to a different market. I’m really hoping to find it a new home quickly, because I’ve been wanting to have this story see the light of day for quite a while now.

But really, most of my month was spent on Camp NaNoWriMo. I had several projects to work on in July. The first was to do a first pass edit on my husband’s novella, which is a sequel to a previous novella he wrote. So I got to spend the beginning of July revisiting that world and those characters, many of whom I adore. The second project was me turning a short story into a novel. I discovered pretty quickly, though, that my outline was sparse, and so it became a short novella instead, clocking in at around 17,000 words. And of course, yesterday, just 1,500 words from the end, I realized that I need to rewrite a chunk of one scene. So I already have editing notes for the novella, even though I’ll be letting it sit for at least a month before I look at it again.

Because my novella came up short of my projected word count, I also worked on extensive edits to the story I mentioned above, and then I started working on worldbuilding for what is going to be my NaNo novel for this November. I am SUPER excited about this one. It involves a far northern land, blanketed with snow for a good part of the year, steampunk, a science academy, and magic. I’ve been largely working on the culture and, of course, the epic genealogy. Because that is the kind of nerd I am!

What does August hold? Well, first off, I’ve got another novella to finish, though I’m taking this one at a more leisurely pace than the breakneck speed of Camp NaNo. I’ve also promised a couple of people that I’d read and comment on stuff they’ve written. And Mad Scientist Journal has just reopened to submissions, so I’ll be busy reading slush and editing stories for the next quarterly. And of course, more worldbuilding for the new novel. So it looks like no rest for the wicked!
