History That Never Was

NaNo Day 1

So I started out at the midnight write-in last night working on a sort of urban fantasy/horror novel involving vampires. I got about 1,300 words done, and called it a night. In the course of that, I switched from third person to first person, because the words just weren’t coming out in third person. Then first person felt like cheating, in a way, because it was easy to just ramble.

However, I woke up this morning, and without even looking at what I had written last night, I realized I had made a terrible mistake. I wasn’t enjoying this novel. I didn’t see how I was possibly going to drag myself through 50,000 words of it.

So I changed novels. I decided that I had some Marsh sisters ideas that would work much better as a novel than as short stories, so I started brain cobbling when I got to work. I wrote about 100 words on my phone. Then, while the hubbie was driving me home, I wrote about 200 more words on my phone.

I’m now 3,545 words into a Marsh sisters novel. It’s a little bit flailing at the moment, because I need to sort of settle in to where I’m going with it. But I’ve got some good pieces, and, more importantly, I’m ENJOYING working on it. It is not like pulling teeth, like the other novel would have been. I’m in my element now, because it’s young adult. And really, I think that’s what I do best.

So I’m going to try to hit 5,000 words tomorrow. Then I’m going to take a step back and look at what I have so far, and see how to turn that into an outline. And then I’ll have a road map, and all will be good.

And then I go off to Portland for 5 days, during which I will do much gaming and drinking, and not much writing. But I’m hoping that I can make myself squeeze in around 500 words a day. I think that’s doable. It means waking up and writing while the hubbie showers, or sneaking in a few hundred words in between games. I can do it!
